A baby black rat doesnt really have much of a checkerboard belly pattern, not in the sense of a corn anyways. It is more of a splotchy pattern with the belly turning more of a solid color from about midway to the tail tip. In adults it is even more pronounced, with some of the very black adults having black bellies from the midpoint down.
