Brian,
I see what you mean- not quite a checkerboard, it's been a while since I flipped one. Though from the pics on the site, the racer neonate has a cream colored belly with very few spots. It's been even longer since I grabbed one of those guys so I wanted to check that I remembered correctly.

:A baby black rat doesnt really have much of a checkerboard belly pattern, not in the sense of a corn anyways. It is more of a splotchy pattern with the belly turning more of a solid color from about midway to the tail tip. In adults it is even more pronounced, with some of the very black adults having black bellies from the midpoint down.
