A juvenile black rat has more of a loose blotched pattern (like the spots on a corn in grey) than a racer. Racers have a narrower pattern with lots of smaller blotches. Check the belly, rat snakes tend to have a checker board pattern and I don't think racers do. As the previous poster said the absence of keels on the scales is a big difference if you can get that close. Lots of pics on the internet if you do a search too!
