:I'm wondering if my winter set-up is adequate for a 19" (straight line shell length) alligator snapper. Its a 4'X4' square, above-ground pond that is about 21 inches high/ deep. Its roughly 200-240 gallons. We have mild winters down here. Maybe 1-2 nights where it dips below 32. Is there enough water there to avoid temperature swings that could be unhealthy or fatal? Will the splashing water from the filter keep him from hibernating properly? I plan to hold off on getting a 300 gallon stock pond until Spring because I have a move coming up. Any thoughts?

Sounds good to me, That amount of water won't fluctuate much in temperature. Even if it gets a layer of ice on it by morning it won't bother him. And it would probably melt off by mid-day. In the Northern part of there range, they are no stranger to a layer of ice for relativly short periods of time. relative to what I have here in North Iowa where we will often have heavy ice cover from mid November thru April. That's why I have to bring mine indoors for the winter. Splashing filter water doesn't seem to bother them, but clear water combined with light seems to make them restless. I keep the lights off unless I am in the Snapper Barn working, for some reason. I hope this helps, Lynn
