Help! I now have a tailless crested and dont know why?!

I went up to spray my male crested bud today and his tail is laying on the ground!!! He was laying in his water bowl, half shed, without a tail! His tail is on the ground, with loose shed stuck to it. The tail broke off right at the base. Why did his tail come off????? Please help!
