he is by himself, and he has never been housed with another cresty. I dont think it was overly dry, but i hadnt sprayed him yet today. As for the loose subsrate, the bottom of the cage is dirt, but our dirt is majorly clay so it is a bunch of 1in. balls of dirt. Right now he is sitting on the rim of his water bowl, and i sprayed him down good becuase he had some shed on his head still.

:Are their any other geckos housed with him? They could have stressed him out and resulted with his tail dropping. If not was the cage overly dry? I ask because the shed might not have been loose and with him pulling on it, he might have spooked himself or accidentally broke it off. However this is a crude guess, but still a possibility. For now though keep the area clean. If you have loose substrate in his tank get rid of it and use paper towels till it heals over. The wound will heal very quickly as the skin pulls tightly together where the break occurs. But anyway he will be just fine =)
