I thought I'd put in something here-when I lived in the piedmont of South Carolina, I found red salamanders in the most odd places. I several times found them under dry logs in a field that recieved full sun all day-there wre even racerunners (a species of lizard) and fence lizards out there. I was always extremely surprised to find beautiful red salamanders underneath these dry logs in full sun. I also have found them in gross, stagnant, warm water. It ws the kind of water that is thick with that orange algal growth and basically just looks really polluted. Now granted, these spots where I've found the red salamanders were all within 500 feet of a very cool, crystal clear spring in a patch of woods where there were tons of larva. In many areas I found the red salamanders (Pseudotriton ruber) to be the most abundant salamander.
