So you are calling your Yellowbelly transversa? The true Yellowbelly Watersnakes (N. e. flavigaster) are a patternless olive-grey with lemon yellow bellies. You described yours as a Blotched (transversa) so I'm kinda confused. He sounds like a brute though! If you ever get pictures, I'd love to see them!
