from Mader DVM "Reptile Medicine & Surgery" "Uric acid is the primary catabolic end-product of protien, non protien nitrogen and purines in reptiles. Of the total nitrogen excreted, 80 to 90% is in the form of uric acid in terrestrial reptiles. The normal blood uric acid value for most reptiles is 0 to 10 mg/dl. Uric acid values greater than 15 mg/dl are considered elevated. Hyperuricemia can be associated with several renal disease and gout. Nephrocalcinosis associated with high dietary levels of calcium or hypervitaminosis D will result in elevated blood uric acid values. Severe bacteremias and septicemias can result in significant renal disease causing a hperuricemia. Nephrotoxic drugs, such as aminoglycoside and sulfa antibiotics, can result in significant renal tubular necrosis causing elevations in plasma uric acid values. Plasma uric acid does not appear to be a sensitive test for renal disease in reptiles and most likely required loss of two thirds of the functional renal mass to elevate in the blood. Also, plasma uric acid is not a specific test for renal disease. Hyperuricemia can be associated with visceral gout. The diet may influence blood uric acid values, especially diet highs in protien and urea. Carnivorous reptiles will tend to have higher blood uric acid values than herbivorous reptiles. The blood uric acid will peak generally the day following a meal in carnivorous reptiles; however, this peak should not exceed 15 mg/dl in normal healthy reptiles" Hope this helps a bit... *flop*
