CHE, off-topic *PIX*, and some questions...

Well, I got me a new CHE(150 watt) and a rheostat. My problem lies in this...I bought the rheostat so I could control the temps of the CHE. When I turn the rheostat down below the "HIGH" setting, the CHE starts to make a high pitch whine. This is not good?? Do I need to let the CHE break in a little more...or should I just use the rheostat on heating pads and bust another 35 out for an actual thermostat? Will a thermostat preform better??? Thanx for any and all replies!!
