They are german prong collars. It is actually a training tool. When the dog is disobeying (with brutus it must be to a pretty heavy extent) there is a technique to 'snap' the leash. What this does is pinches the scruff of the neck as a dominant pack member (or mother) would do. I actually have padded prongs as well. The prong portion of my collar has rubber padding to prevent chaffing because he has such a thin coat. With anything, they can be used the wrong way or in excess and create the wrong results or abuse. The worst part of the prong collars is that they look SOOOOO Evil. I did test it on myself. I put it on my bare thigh and had my fiance with both hands give me the hardest pop he could. Much harder than dog would receive. It was like 8 little fingers pinching. Never broke skin, but with the situations that sometime need extra control, and when in training, he needs to wear it. Considering he is still under constant commands while we are training he rarely has it off other than when sleeping, but I hope that by this time next year I will be able to take it off in the house. Outside due to the many different things that spook him, I think he will always need it...
