I think the worst part of the Prong Collar is the look. I just looks sooo medievil and dangerous. Then you stick it on a dog with a 24" neck and skin so think it broke the needles for his vax. It just looks evil.
:As a past breeder and trainer of German Shepherds, I know all too well that a regular choke collar does not phase them, they have too much skin and fur on the neck area and not enough nerve endings. Good luck with your new dog. Those type of dogs are usually good companion dogs. Shame previous owners made him/her into something different. And for people who don't understand, many times a thin chain collars bites into the skin without even phasing the dog and the thicker chain collars do not release as well, therefore not effective for the choking dog or training.
:Good luck again :)
::Thanks for explaining better... I do better explaining things for the iguanas than i do the dogs... Brutus is always in training right now. We still have some issues with previous lifestyle... Actually this is his second week off leash. We are getting somewhere.

:::those collars are great for large breed dogs that are more stubborn then others. Since dogs do not have much feeling in their neck the pull and release of a regular choker collar means nothing to them. they should not be worn at all times though, just when training.
::::They are german prong collars. It is actually a training tool. When the dog is disobeying (with brutus it must be to a pretty heavy extent) there is a technique to 'snap' the leash. What this does is pinches the scruff of the neck as a dominant pack member (or mother) would do. I actually have padded prongs as well. The prong portion of my collar has rubber padding to prevent chaffing because he has such a thin coat. With anything, they can be used the wrong way or in excess and create the wrong results or abuse. The worst part of the prong collars is that they look SOOOOO Evil. I did test it on myself. I put it on my bare thigh and had my fiance with both hands give me the hardest pop he could. Much harder than dog would receive. It was like 8 little fingers pinching. Never broke skin, but with the situations that sometime need extra control, and when in training, he needs to wear it. Considering he is still under constant commands while we are training he rarely has it off other than when sleeping, but I hope that by this time next year I will be able to take it off in the house. Outside due to the many different things that spook him, I think he will always need it...
