I tend to agree with you regarding shelters following the stance of the HSUS, Cindy. This has always confused me though since I believe that the HSUS operates a maximum of one shelter itself and has little to nothing to do with actual local shelters and societies. As a result of this the HSUS potentially syphons donations AWAY from local shelters because John & Jane Q believe that the HSUS has something to do with local organizations. In fact, according to a December 2002 "Worth" magazine article (p. 95)they are on the "Not Exactly Top Ten" list of the American Institute of Philanthropy. Seems that in 2000 they had $65 million in revenue alone and only spent $29 million on programs. "Of that, $9.4 million was part of a joint educational-fundraising effort. The society gave out only $1.6 million in cash grants to other animal protection groups. The API gives the group a "D" for spending as much as 53% of its expenses on fundraising."

According to Guidestar.org they started out 2001 with $106,840,986 total revenue and ended with $94,613,384. Gee, where does all that money go - I mean besides to the six figure salaries that the top 3-6 employees are making.....
