Definatly agreed. I have had the opportunity to talk with some PETA members in the past at shows (for those who do not know, I represent the Iguana contingent at a few Wisconsin/Illinois area ALL EDUCATIONAL shows.) and let me tell you they scare me. I have had someone ask me if a snake can be made a vegetarian because the owner was becoming one. I have had a person offer to buy my iguanas so that she could release them in the wilds of WISCONSIN back where they belong. I have heard stories of people trying to make dogs and cats vegetarians (because their owners are PETA members). I have no clue what some of these people are thinking, and I really have no logical way to combat it. But I have let people know very freely my stance on several things.
1> I do not nor will I ever support a national organization like HSUS. I support Locally with shelters that I know give a hoot as well as my rescue and adoption work. I dont have all my reptiles because I bought them. They needed homes. I had one. Part of my wedding gift will support 2 humane societies in my area.
2> I do not support nor will I ever support PETA. There is a BIG difference between my beliefs on animals and theirs.
3> I do my best not to support any organization or company that proposes a ban on ANY kind of pet. Be it reptiles, birds or specific breeds of dogs. Hell half the world thinks my dog is a pit bulls when it isnt!
4> I practice and promote responsible pet ownership. I never use my pets in a way to intimidate people (not even the relatives that I hate). My pets are ALWAYS under my control and supervision at all times when they are out of my home. My dog is leashed, liscensed, trained, and microchipped. My reptiles are contained in some fashion when in the general public.
5> Most importantly of all, I let people know my beliefs on groups like HSUS with documentation. I present articles from magazines, printouts from web, newpaper articles and I do my darnedest to keep my emotions out of it. As one of the rules that we are given as a PH moderator, I always smile 'from the wrists down' as best I can.
But then again I know that discussing this with you I am preaching to the choir! ;)

:To the best of my knowledge, Cindy, they do not directly support ANY shelters in this country other than the one that they are rumored to operate in D.C.. I believe they even refused the shelter that I work with when they inquired about a grant/donation to assist with the large cruelty case that I was involved in.
:I forget where I found it but I tripped over an employee list one day that showed more and more PETA people (actual former employees) working for the HSUS. That's a dangerous intermingling in my book......
