The reason I asked about the meter is that I have a unit myself and was curious.
As far as 12-16" not being a safe distance I woould have to add to that statement by saying that it is dependant not only on the diffusion type (flood/spot) but also the species upon which the bulb is being used. In my experience, there's nothing wrong with using 100 or 160w flood bulbs at a distance of 12-16" for many species including both iguanas and, say, anoles (for comparison) as long as the enclosure is large enough and/or adequately designed. The reason I say this is that I'm also using 160w flood bulbs in conjunction with 10 and 20g tanks for some species with great success as well as 160w spot bulbs on 55g tanks. It comes down to species, enclosure setup, and bulb positioning.....
