is as a cage top weight with the cord cut off! :) The problem with heat rocks is that a good percentage of them will malfunction at some point and create "hot spots". This is not only dangerous to your lizard but a fire hazard as well. It's not recommended that you wrap a heat rock with any flammable material.
I don't trust the mylar heat tapes either. We had a frightening experience with one of those ourselves and I know someone that came close to losing all of his pets due to a fire caused by one of these. I've used regular human heating pads safely and effectively for supplemental heat.
