: Kitty...anyway sorry for going off on a tangent about horned toads mostly a joke anyway...I don't know where you live..but anyway I live in S. Calif. Fire Ants are not a problem...I do keep my male in an outdoor enclosure all day & night which is on caster . I think the only way to destroy fire ant mounds is the kill the queen, & chemically by flooding the center of the mound .
: I would not worry about your Ig & fire ants..tough skinned as horned toads are...and not as scrumptious as say your dog! If you do see mounds around your place Id get a professional exterminator...toxic or non-toxic...and get rid of the bums!
: Gina, Juana & Feo

Unfortunately Gina, horned toads are not immune to the toxins in Africanised fire ants. I too live in So. Cal, and the fire ants are gradually making their way here. They've already been spotted 40 miles outside of Orange County, and a shipment of soil has been put under quarentine because it was infested with these pesky little critters.
I've been to Texas many times and I've had my run-ins with these obnoxious insects. When I was two years old I reached into a mound of fire ants and almost had to go to the emergency room!
Horned toads are slow-moving and not immune to the toxins Africanised fire ants carry. But you are 100% correct about pesticides having a harsh effect on the horned toad population!
