Yes they are very frightened and take awhile to tame. Just remember he still thinks you are trying to eat him. It takes time to build trust. Offer him some fruit treats from your hand like mango, papaya, melon, berries. (not too many or he'll get the runs!) Talk softly to him, be nice...most will come around.
Do you have a UV light and a heat lamp? What are you feeding him?
