>>>>>> The tip of my iguana's tail has died(?) and now it is falling off<<<<<<<<
called dry gangrene or tail rot because the tip is dead tissue....turning a dark brn/black, rigid (unable to bend);stiff, like a dried up twig, shrinks as the scales collapse into the central (cartilage) part of the tail.

>>>>>Why did this happen?<<<<<<<<
Majority of tail TIP rot is from trauma of some sort...tail whipping against hard surface, side of enclosure/tank, getting stepped on, caught in something. Most often rot occurs from point of trauma on down but can also begin to slowly radiate up affecting healthy tail. Retained shed rings can also cause tail tip necrosis as the retained shed builds up, shrinks, then suffocates healthy tail beneath but this is not as common as localized trauma. I have NEVER heard/read of dry gangrene from trauma (NOT caused by bacterial or fungal infections) in tail tips to cause a systemic infection and kill an iguana (bombastic rhetoric!)
>>>>Is this my fault?<<<<<<
Not at all! This is SOOOOOO common with ALL green iguanas ...as they're mostly TAIL!

>>>>How do I prevent anymore of the tail from dying and falling off?<<<<
If you want healthy tail to begin to regenerate the tail tip MUST be amputated. Have your vet do it or if you are the self-sufficient type....Email me for instructions on do-it-at home tail tip amputations. A few vets (altho they mean well) do NOT amputate the tail tip correctly may 1)may twist it off and send you on your way bill in hand only for the tail rot to reoccur 2)may put sutures in it 3) may perscribe unwarranted antibiotics causing more problems like inappetance, stress, disruption to gut microflora.
Tail tip amputation is a very simple procedure but must be done correctly so that new HEALTHY tail can begin to regenerate.
