The unwarranted use of antibiotics when NO INFECTION (bacteria) is present serves no purpose by the prescribing vet other than generating extra dollars.
Baytril not only has the side effects posted but is tough on the kidneys (compounded possibly by an already dehydrated ig),...can lead to uric acid crystallization, joint and bone problems, and seizures (not to mention ^resistance, and superbugs). The combined risks aren't worth it in THIS situation. Re: IZ's prob. (undetected systemic bacterial infection ?) I sure understand the paranoia and definately think the parental and oral a/bs he recieved were within reason for its intended purpose. He was diagnosed with the infection to begin with following surgery right? What would motivate Drs/Vets to prescribe a/bs when there is no infection? Not only mo $ but to leave the customer with a feeling of satisfaction that SUMTHING is being/has been done EVEN IF it is not/was not warranted and can cause these side effects.
I know you have a prob with me giving people advice about at home tail tip amputations (when I can... I do e-mail them vs. post here, other forums) I have sent my instructions to 70-100 people in the past 2 years on doing them at home. I list very strict guidelines with detailed instruction on doing tail TIP amputations. Ive received MANY thank-you e-mails of healthy iguana tails regenerating with NO infection whatsoever reported in any of them. A select few of these are from iguana owners whose vets performed 1st or 2nd amps....All my e-mails send instructions to seek veterinarian advice if they are uncomfortable, unsure if its dry gangrene, or more than the TIP is affected. As Henry Lizardlover once wrote me in essence...'there is NO reason whatsoever to pay a vet X number of dollars for the amputation of a piece of insignificant tail that will regenerate in 2 months' if the amputation is done correctly as instructed.
