Is this Baytril? If so, call your vet and see if you can just give him the dose orally. There are tricks to this; i.e. squirt the dose on a piece of bread & ig eats all the bread.

This is a quote from an article under Melissa Kaplan re treating abscess in reptiles:

"Antibiotics generally given are Baytril, Pipercillin, Amikacin. Amikacin is nephrotoxic and must be administered with supplemental fluids. The Pip can cause tissue necrosis around the injection site and so should be diluted with saline or Ringers. Baytril can sting going in and if administered subcutaneously ("sub-q" or "SQ"), it too can cause painful tissue necrosis (necrosis=death). Baytril injectible can be administered by mouth and it can also be obtained in tablet form. "

If this is an antibiotic that can be given by mouth, I would certainly want to do it that way. Even though you may have to dose by mouth for 10 DAYS vs 3 SHOTS. I'd personally be more comfortable with the oral.....and I have a feeling so would you and your baby!

Discuss all this with your vet & be sure to let her know how uncomfortable you are with doing the injections yourself. If this wasn't Baytril, maybe she'd be willing to switch you to it so that you can do oral. It NEVER hurts to ask/discuss these things with your vet....or it shouldn't.

Now this is just my personal opinion.....but if the vet insists that this Rx has to be injected AND if it were me, then I'd bring my ig in and let HER do the shots NOT ME and let HER assistants help her not ME. I have learned that it is best for the pet to think of you as the rescuer not the accomplice!!

Get back in touch & let us know how things work out for you!
