I believe the perfect time for taming is the day you bring them home....start with talking to them nicely through the cage for a couple of days, add opening the door of the cage while you talk to them, then do the same with your hand in the cage, add petting them and finally holding them, do each step until your igs seems comfortable with it (this could take a couple of months). If the ig is still extremely timid start over with the last step he seemed comfortable with. This is by no means a fail proof method and others may have better advice, but it has worked with 4 of my 5 igs, I still have a 3 year old with an attitude, but we have learned to accept him as he is.
