If he is the only vet around, then perhaps you are right that he is fine for checking stool. But even a reptile vet needs to know which gut flora is found in an iguana (and when it seems to be getting unbalanced). I would rather establish my ig with a keeper vet (one that you'll go to for years and one that can handle operations and care). If a reptile vet says you should feed protein, they don't know what they are talking about more than likely. My vets go to regular conventions on reptiles (latest info) and have charts on their walls showing appropriate diets which do not include protein. Sometimes you have to do a little digging, but there are good vets out there. And, if there are none very experienced where you live, pick the least arrogant, most knowledgeable vet that is willing to study up on igs once you bring yours in...and isn't afraid to consult with others that know more than him/her.
