Hi everyone,
Joey scared me to death last night. His tail had had a 'crooked' spot on it and last night he whacked his tail and lost the whole end!
My boyfriend said that this happens in iguanas especially since Joey's tip of his tail had already at one time been lost since it was a different texture and black in colour.
Needless to say I called the Vet emergency clinic at 8:30 at nite since I was very worried about it. Then my boyfriend and I drove to the clinic and had to wait until 10:30 pm til we could be seen (a lot of pet accidents that night...must have been a full moon). People in the waiting room were totally laughing at me for bringing an iguana in...saying...'well this is a first, seeing a lizard in the waiting room of a vet', and then they would say...'well what do you expect the vet to do to help?'
I told them...I'm not sure, but I know I'm doing the right thing :)
The doctor put some gauze on the end of his tail since it was bleeding and then gave him an antibiotic by injection and gave me some oral antibiotics to take home.
Again I heard someone behind me at the vet's office say...'giving antibiotic to a lizard...there's another first for me'.
I told him it was no different than him being there with his dog...iguanas are part of the family as well.
Joey's vet bill was $110 dollars, but well worth it. He is such a little cutey...and while he was at the vet he just snuggled into the blanket I had brought along and lay with his head against my neck. I don't care what people say...iguanas do bond with people and they have such great personalities...*grins*.
Now I'm trying to figure out how to get Joey to eat his antibiotics. He has really shown no preference to any sort of fruit or veggie to this point...only 'disgust' at certain veggies...*smiles*.
I got some peach baby food and put a 1/2 tsp mixed with the antibiotic into his meal today and I hope it makes it into him.
If not, tomorrow I may try 'antibiotic banana'.
Anyone have any suggestions?
