Former Dover pet shop owner pleads guilty to cruelty charges
By BRAD MORIN
Democrat Staff Writer
DOVER— The owner of a former exotic pet store pleaded guilty June 3 to seven misdemeanor charges of cruelty to animals.
William A. Gammon, 27, with a last-known address of Winter Street in Dover, entered the pleas in Dover District Court before Judge Robert Cullinane.
Gammon operated Feeding Time, a pet store on Chapel Street in Dover. The Dover Police Department, the Cocheco Valley Humane Society and a rescue group known as Broken Reptile removed 105 animals from Feeding Time on Feb. 7. They carried away various snakes, lizards, iguanas, tarantulas, birds, rabbits and other species.
Police said some of the animals were dead, while others were in "obvious ill health." Police began investigating after learning that power was shut off to the building and they eventually persuaded Gammon to sign over custody of the animals to the Humane Society. The pet store’s license was also surrendered voluntarily.
Lt. Frank Santin, Dover police prosecutor, said the seven charges represent different classifications of animals. Gammon’s sentencing has been postponed until July 22 at 1 p.m. while the Department of Corrections completes a presentence investigation, Santin said.
Santin said restitution is a factor the Police Department will consider in its sentence recommendation. The Humane Society and reptile rescue group have incurred about $34,000 in costs, he said.
The animal cruelty charges are Class A misdemeanors, punishable by up to a year in jail.
