With my first iguana, I took the sweet route and it worked pretty well. I did have to stand up to him when he reached breeding season, but only a couple times...and I was never aggressive about it. My husband got angry and pushed him-- well guess who he tried to mate with? (hee hee) He took that as a challenge I guess. Anyway, he trusted me more and it all paid off.
My current iguana has been more of a pain from the start. I have not taken the sweet route with him. Perhaps he would be nicer if I did, but he is just a very active, hyper spastic iguana (and it takes some wrangling to deal with him sometimes). He is not mean in any way, but he has a BIG attitude. I have stood up to him and have to continue asserting my alpha status. So far we have a kind of respectful relationship but he really doesn't care for people in general (he tolerates them though and is only your friend if he needs to climb on you or you have a treat!) He is no lap pet, that's for sure though!
Lately he is headbobbing at me constantly (he seems to be struggling for a bit more power) My friend hit the nail on the head when he theorized Sleestack is saying, "You're not the boss of me!!!" I just pet him and kiss him when he does this (which is actually negative reinforcement since he hates it!) He is something else, but I love him anyway!
