How big is the ig right now? The 3 foot by 3 foot cage might last long enough for you to find a reasonable compromise with your parents. The first thing I would do is point them towards some sites like anapsid.org or have them read the Green Iguana Manual. Both make a very clear case against the cage size = ig size myth. Also, if your parents are anything like mine were when I was growing up, space and cost are the two main issues. If you can present them a reasonable proposal that will lessen their concerns, I bet they'll be more open to hearing what you have to say. So...
Consider building your own cage. Aquariums that are 4 feet or larger will set your parents back some serious money, but building a cage can be done for relatively little expense. Search around online for a good design, or I can mail you one that I used for Phil, who is about 9 months of age. It will last him for a while yet. Try offering to keep the cage in your room or, if the climate where you live is appropriate and you can find a critter-proof design, outside during the spring and summer months.
While we're at it, what is your setup like now? How about diet and lighting? These are all expenses to keep in mind and, if you can find a reasonable way to present them to your parents, I think they will probably be more receptive. Feel free to email,
-Lily
