: : My vet (also a herp vet) has suggested to me that all the fancy reptile
: : lights are a waste of money.He feels as far as basking...any 100-
: : 150 watt light will do fine, depending on cage size.
: Absolutely correct. "Specialty" reptiles basking lights (actives and powersun excluded) are the exact same bulbs as can be purchased at a hardware store, but marked up 100-500% simply because they are marketed towards reptiles.
: As for uv he claims that the lizards
: : have to be a foot or less away from light for it to be effective
: : which is not practical in most cases.
: Correct as wwll if you are talking about a standard flor. tube.
: He recommened a vitamin D supplement.He claims it
: : goes staight into lizard thus assuring it's getting what it needs.
: No need. I've never used ANY supplements with iguanas, and never had a problem. Have UVB lights set-up corectly and let the igs regulate their own D3.
: : The only time he recommened a night light is when the temperature in my house goes below
: : 70 -75 degrees. He says herps in general will do better with the cooler night time temps
: : because it mimics there natural enviorment better. He feel they eat better and are more
: : comfortable when they cool down in the evening.
: :
: Not sure on the comfort factor (ever had a lizard tell you?), but 70-75 is perfectly acceptable for nighttime temps.
: If you notice I was sure to put a lot of he feels,he thinks,
: : and he recomends in my post because these are his oppinions. What do you all think?
I think as far as the D3 thing he feels the uv lights are a waste of money.Although he likes the
idea of putting the lizard out to sun.(in a cage with protection from
the direct sun to let the lizard get out of sun if it wants to)
