Well obviously the sun is the best solution but for most that is not practical...at least not all the time. Because of this, a UV light is essential. An active UV light or Zoomed Powersun blub allows your ig to be further than 12" away and still get UV light. I use the Zoomed 5.0 Iguana UV light, however, and built my cage so that it is less than 12" from my ig's basking spot. This is not hard to do! And it certainly is not a waste of money. It's much easier having a light, than worrying about D3 quantities etc.
