Hi Emma, I went down & read your initial post. I've asked Dino to double check the info I'm about to share with you.......But I seem to recall that when our female was having trouble with her egg laying her levels were way elevated also. The regular emergency vet who saw her initially was very concerned about this. The reptile vet who saw her the next morning told us that high levels were COMMON in gravid igs and that he'd only be concerned if they remained elevated after laying.
If this rescue ig has been on a bad diet & limited exercise prior to her coming to you & just prior to becoming gravid or during most of her gravid period, there is a strong possibility that she will need some type of medical intervention.
I am not relating this to scare you at all just to let you know that bad things can still happen even in healthy igs. Ours prolapsed during laying & had to have what amounts to a hysterectomy. She had laid most of her eggs prior to the prolapse. Vet's x-rays showed eggs loose in her abdomen. Left alone, these would have eventually poisoned her system and killed her.
From this experience, my best advice would be to keep a very good eye on her. If she lays a few eggs and lays no more that day, I'd get her to the vet to have her checked over. If something comes out of her that looks for all the world like bloody sausage links, get her to a herp vet immediately because that's a prolapse. (Sorry for the visual explanation) Quiz your vet NOW to be sure that he/she has performed reptile hysterectomies. They are difficult and different. We were extremely lucky that the herp vet we took her to was well-skilled in all areas of iguanas. Otherwise, I'm sure we would have lost her. You don't want to be running around trying to find a skilled vet surgeon during an emergency.
Dino is the only successful breeder of igs. that I know...there may be others but I don't know them. He has good advice for you. I've only gone thru 2 clutches & both were infertile.
I've rambled long enuf to break iZ's mom's record! LOL LOL What was my point?....oh yeah, those levels. You might question the need to bring them down right now.
Good luck to both of you.....I'll be thinking of you. Keep us posted!
