If you really want an iguana, you should adopt one, definitely...
BUT
This may sound kind of odd, but I would consider this decision very very carefully, as IMO, iguanas really don't make good pets. They are fairly intelligent, and rewarding captives, but their requirements are daunting at best. Even with the hundreds of pounds of dirt and tons of food my monitors need, the ig has definitely been the most expensive and time consuming animal I keep. It is also my opinion that, given their arboreal habitat, there is no such thing as a suitable iguana enclosure. I ended up giving up and letting him roam the house (still far from ideal). You should also consider that, if they are in a nasty mood they can be just as dangerous as any large/med sized monitor or tegu.
To sum up, my relationship with my ig has been very rewarding, but is has not always been easy, and it certainly isn't always fun. I love the guy, but our relationship is definitely lopsided and dysfunctional. =)
Just be sure you are ready for the WHOLE ig experience.
