1.) If children are at all a possibility anytime in the forseeable future then the fate of the iguana should certainly be considered but moreso because of the potential lack of attention/time for proper care as opposed to anything else. Simply "having a child" is not necessarily the sole reason to "get rid of" (interesting choice of words I might add)the iguana. With proper husbandry practices, Salmonella should be no more of a threat after a child arrives than before. According to CD reports, actions as simple as the washing of hands with soap and water is enough to cleanse the bacteria from skin. Anywhere else is simply good husbandry practices.....
2.)From my personal experience and in interacting with many others, "buying" an iguana and "rescuing" an iguana are two different things. They are mutually exclusive - in your case, you "bought" the iguana which just re-enforced the store's assumedly sub par husbandry practices sending the message that they "only" have to keep the animal alive until someone comes in and feels "sorry" for the animal and purchases it. One of the rules that we have around the rescue her is that money goes for things like food, supplies, and veterinary care. Money does NOT go toward purchasing animals. With 76 animals currently under my roof only 2 were actually purchased. The rest were adoptions and/or rescues.
