I have never seen this happen...(actually, to make sure I just checked a few of mine) I dunno, what "brand" did you buy? I have ESU and Zoo med. The Zoo med brand seems to have some "crackling" of some type of enamel/paint coat. It looks like decorators cracle effect, but verry faint. I doubt this is a problem as all of my zoo med heat elements, (16) have this (mabe that what you see?) The ESU brand does not have this.
I really prefer these (cramic heaters) as they are fairly inexpensive to run, dont need to be replaced whenever they get bumped, and dont throw light at nighttime. I have never had a problem with these heat sorces. The rattling...I duuno..Best of luck?
