Are ceramic heat emitters prone to cracking?

Just wondered because the first one I bought (100W) developed a rattling sound and had several small hairline cracks running through it after it went through the first heat cycle. I exchanged it for another one, and this one doesn't rattle, but it also has developed some hairline cracks in it after several heat cycles. You have to look very closely to see the cracks, but they're there. I wanted to know if other people have experienced this too, and/or if it was considered "normal".
