Id say all of the regular posters here know HOW Much work is involved in taking in an iguana and many or most of us know how that all ready HARD task is mad even more difficult when we take in a rescue SO WHY???? What is it about iguanas that captures your heart or fascination? Is an iguana the only reptile you have if so why and if not what others do you have? Okay so its friday morning and im putting off clenaing cages until DD eatst eh rest of her breakfast and does her routine toss my plate off the top shelf spreading the left overs from the roof to the floor and all in between lol.
Okay so heres my answers. About 5 to almost 6 years ago hubby and I was walking in a pet store (WAY WAY before I had the net WAY WAY before I knew about alot of petstores, just figured thats they way they all were ) ANYWAY hubby adn I were walking into a store and had PREVIOSULY seen the baby ig's hubby was fascinated I was like EWWWW. Okay I had a dog and ferret at the time and figured it was only right to bend and allow him to have a pet, the only deal was id drop the food in NO WAY was I cleaning the tank (YES I SAID TANK ill get to that in a minute) and no WAY was I touching this THING. Well we purchased this LITTLE iguana ALL BE WE DID know it would get big but we were told many things that I know no are UNTRUE. We were sold a 10 galon tank, told it would last up to three years (HEY remember I DIDNT Know any better then lol) but hubby and I both figured as soon as it started to grow big we'd make a better cage. Well NO uvb light, a heat rock, repti bark, an undertank heater, some commercial pellets that we were told to mix with lettuce, carrots and a fruit. Well we bring this iguana home and set the cage up on our head board of the bed. Remeber at this point in still EWWING at a lizzard in MY place EWWW. Well the first night was CREEPY with this iguaan above my head. Well we had him/her for no more than a week, I tried force feeding it YES THE PERSON WHO SWORE SHED NEVER TOUCH IT , was trying to hand feed this baby. Called thestore and was told oh it might be a couple days befor he'd eat because of the change, it was less than a week and I came back in the bedroom one day to find a dead iguana in the tank, I had to be the one to handle the situation as hubby was at work, needless to say after taht experience we had swored off iguanas all toghter, we didnt want to deal wtih the death of another one and for YEARS we felt it was OUR FAULT the little thing died. Looking back I dont think anything we did caused this little ones demise.
Flash to about 5 almost 6 years later. Three kids, two dogs, a rabbit, and at the time a guniea pig (who has since passed), and a chinchilla that recently joined the family. I again felt hubby should have him a pet that was HIS (okay I live in a zoo and LOVE it lol). So I start doing research, learn alot more and start visiting boards like acme's well Along comes MR. D to help answer my questions. He tells me all the important stuff after ive researched, he helps lead me to other sites to conitune reading, then tells me the importance of rescue and that, As a stuborn person or maybe a truly fearful one and knowing I had three kids I wanted to start "fresh" with one that didnt have "issues" . SO i start calling around pet stores to start to price things bulbs, the iguana, fixtures and the like. Well I hear of this little one named RUPERT (later to be found to be a SHE instead of a HE and now named DD), well a week after hearing this story I couldnt get her out of my head conviced hubby that since we were suppose to be getting our house (this was a year ago almost), that it be okay to go look, hubby wanted to wait till we were moved). Well in the store we walk, I look at her in the cage, small little thing 16 1/2 inchs head to tail when we brought her home. She basically wrapped her legs around my arma nd my heart at the same time. Some teens were there and started talking like how she'd fit in there 10 gallion and I lied said she was on hold for me NO WAY was I lettign them do that to her. Begged pleaded adn convinced the hubby that she had to come home with me. REmember we had NOTHING and I mean NOTHING set up at home. SO AFter many nasty looks from my three kids, who were nothing less than UNHAPPY that mommy was bringing home that NASTY EWW THING I brought her home. She stayed in the box they sent her for the drive in while I ran to wal mart and got huge tote containers (NO I DO NOT RECCOMEND THIS) but I was in a pinch. Well I fixed the continers up and she had to keep thsoe as her cage for about a month or so as finacially we got hit hard and couldnt afford the cage we needed to build. BUT I will say this she was ONLY in it at bed time and was out and about MANY times Per day. She became MY girl instead my hubby's and almost a year later her favorite spot is on my head and I went from EWWWWWWW to the one that cares for her daily and loves to brag and see how well she's comming along.
SO tell me your story.
