MIAMI HERALD (Florida) 16 January 02 Iguana bite severs teen's fingertip (Hannah Sampson)
A Hollywood teenager who bought a nearly five-foot-long iguana from friends had reason to regret it 24 hours later when the reptile bit off the tip of his right index finger.
Police, summoned to the home of 14-year-old Christopher Charley at 3:14 p.m. Tuesday by his mother, zapped the iguana with a Taser gun capable of quelling a barroom brawl. The creature was not fazed.
``It will drop a man but not an iguana,'' said Matt Phillips, of Hollywood Fire Rescue.
Finally, after getting permission from Christopher's parents, police shot the iguana three times.
``It was going after them,'' said Christopher's mother, Mitchelle Barnes.
After slitting open the iguana with a scalpel, fire rescue workers found an olive, but no missing fingertip.
The fingertip had been lying in the grass, overlooked, in Christopher's backyard. A cousin found it.
By this time, Christopher and the the iguana had been rushed to Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital in the same fire rescue unit. The fingertip followed, ferried to the hospital by police car.
At a news conference, Dr. Yoav Barnavon -- a plastic surgeon -- said the fingertip could not be reattached because the damage was too severe.
``The part was very crushed and it was torn up,'' he said.
The teen had been playing with his new pet in the backyard, trying to pick it up when it bit his finger.
Christopher, a right-handed freshman at McArthur High who loves to draw cartoons and dragon-type creatures, was released from the hospital Tuesday evening. Barnavon said the teen still would be able to draw, despite the missing fingertip and superficial wounds to his middle finger.
The Hollywood household has seven children and, until Tuesday, had seven iguanas. Now there are six.
``He's still upset that they had to kill it,'' said Christopher's mother.
The family said they aren't worried that the other iguanas will become violent.
Said Noye Charley, Christopher's father: ``These are vegetarian.''
