Iguana Thwarts Would-Be Thieves
A spunky blue iguana got the best of some would-be crooks who were trying to kidnap him from his home.

Eyewitness News 25 reports that Ike, an 18-pound blue iguana, apparently put up a vicious fight when some teenagers allegedly tried to steal him from his home.

"If you're (a stranger), he can be very vicious with the tail and the claws," owner Edna Hamm said.

Police said it was the tail and claws that might have saved Ike.

A neighbor said she spotted some teenagers trying to steal Ike by cutting through his cage and forcing him into a pet carrier. In the end, both iguana and carrying device were left behind

"I'm sure they had quite a fight," Hamm said. She added that she is glad the would-be iguana-thieves did not steal Ike or any of his friends who live in the same cage.

"I'm glad they didn't get him, or any of them. They're my babies," she said.

A police officer responded to the scene with a K-9 unit. They tried unsuccessfully to track down the teen suspects.

Hamm said it's a good thing the teenagers didn't kidnap Ike. He and his companion, Sissy, are soon to be parents. They are expecting 40-60 baby blue iguanas.
