In Reply to: here's your answer, with an unexpected story - with bit of a sad ending :( posted by Axe on November 11, 2001 at 20:02:03:
First, I hope that Annie is OK. Keep an eye on the toes and make sure that there are no open wounds around them. Gangrene is nasty to deal with. You may want to take her in for a general X ray to make sure that there aren't any broken ribs or anything else - just to be safe.
The reason I asked about the screening is for several reasons. One, standard window screening usually isn't strong enough for an iguana of any size. They can and usually do rip through it. Second reason I asked is because of the fact that this is an outdoor enclosure that Annie and Skittles are in if I'm not mistaken. IF such is the case, the is yet another reason for the concern of the screening.
Believe it or not screening, whether aluminum or nylon or anything else, if made in the close weave that window screening is made, can significantly decrease the amount of UV light that enters an enclosure. We've done some testing on our own regarding this, both with aluminum window screen indoors and testing the "reptarium" cloth screening in an outdoor setting. The results were somewhat disturbing in that the screening decreased the available UV wavelengths by as much as 50%. We have yet to conduct similiar tests on hardware cloth but we believe that the reduction in UV is due to the tight weave of the screening and the length of UV waves. Not being totally versed in the subject we can't be 100% sure. We don't think that the hardware cloth will have the adverse results that the screening did.
Just something to think about. Hopefully Annie didn't give you too much of a workout...;)
