Worms and Appetite

I know that there are many reasons why an ig does not eat well. One could be that it has worms or it is not used to the environment. It is really difficult to get a vet in my area. Is it okay to give my ig a dose of worm medicine, whether it has or does not have worms. If it is okay, which one is recommended? If not then, what is one sure way of telling whether it has worms? thanks guys. I have learnt alot from this forum.
