How do you train an older ig?(5 years old)

Hi...I recently obtained a male ig a little over 5 years old, and I was wondering if they can be tamed like a young ig can. He isn't really wild. He lets me get into the cage to change papers and what not, but he does not let me pick him up. If I try, I get tail whipped and almost bitten. The previous owner didn't really spend a lot of time handling him, but otherwise he is in good condition. I just want to be able to pick him up and handle him without getting a chunk taken out of my hand. So is it possible to tame an older ig, or is it too late for this "dog" to learn new tricks, so to speak? Any tips? Thanks.
