In Reply to: How do you train an older ig?(5 years old) posted by newbie on November 07, 2001 at 18:19:36:
: Hi...I recently obtained a male ig a little over 5 years old, and I was wondering if they can be tamed like a young ig can. He isn't really wild. He lets me get into the cage to change papers and what not, but he does not let me pick him up. If I try, I get tail whipped and almost bitten. The previous owner didn't really spend a lot of time handling him, but otherwise he is in good condition. I just want to be able to pick him up and handle him without getting a chunk taken out of my hand. So is it possible to tame an older ig, or is it too late for this "dog" to learn new tricks, so to speak? Any tips? Thanks.
Melissa Kaplan (wrote the book Iguanas for Dummies) is the board leader on AOL's reptile board and she said she has tamed older igs just as well as younger ones, BUT.......the tail whippings and biting (of course) hurt a lot more, so be careful. You can wear protective gloves and try to stay out of the tail's way.
