Tail Question

My newly rescued ig's tail is drying up. I took him/her to the vet today and he says to leave it alone. Is this true because from all the messages and replies on this forum that I read, it seems like these problems are treated by amputation. The vet did not indicate that this was gangrene so why is the tail tip drying up?
