know (evidently) about them between a mass, mega store, a "mom & pop" store (this is really a ridiculous term..the proper term is PRIVATELY OWNED) and direct sale.
The mega or mass retailers get an advantage of coporate ordering savings and or "pallet savings". The small stores have a dis-advantage of this plus delivery restrictions, frieght prices and certain applications of meeting the total money spent to meet "deals".
Now where did you get the idea that people are "starting up" ? I'm talking of people that has been "in the business" before and after the mass suppliers came into being. This plus your ordering dierct has caused these situations to come about to where the small merchants HAS to get out and have a second income. Do some looking. look of how many small independent stores has been around for awhile and still trying to make it with these adverse conditions. I don't know your age but where would of people go at one time if it WASN'T for the small independent retailers ? Watch that special on the coming of the Wal-Marts in small town USA syndrom on A&E channel. Relate this program to what's happing in small towns all accross the U.S.
Do you or have ever bought any jewelry ? Ever bought any precious metals ? I think THAT IS A CRIME ! You will NEVER cut out a middle man compleatly. In fact when direct ordering and mass merchants become the only source...wonder who you will buy from them and pay the price ? !
ask any of these businesses that are no longer IN business on how they feel about a SUPER WAL-MART moving into your town:
business supplies,
plumbing business,
bicycle shop,
grocery stores,
eye care centers,
some clothing stores,
some hardware stores,
lawn mower sellers,
some five & dime stores,
some shoe stores,
yada, yada.
I've seen it happen to 4 small towns with the advent of Wal-Marts moving in. In this program there were 33 stores that closed due to this in the small town.
So with my final thoughts.....the back bone of this country was built on the small business that is continueing losing because of people like you that think of tossing out the middle man in the idea that we have been screwing all of you all of these years.

: First, let me say that I really cannot comprehend the idea of starting a business, regardless of what it is, that will never be profitable enough that one would continue having to work a second job - in my mind that simply is not the point of starting a business - unless you WANT to keep it so small that you have to work a second job.
: My absolute BEST example, as far as markups are concerned, is that I know of one retailer who gets ZooMed's for $17 wholesale. Now if ZooMed is willing to sell to a "mom and pop" for that wholesale price then WHY, or more directly HOW, can the large "chain" stores that can purchase in bulk justify a possible 100%+ markup on these bulbs ?
: There simply cannot be equivalent levels of pure ignorance dictating that "misinformation" be handed out - I just can't buy that. I've witnessed entirely too many incidents, in various stores, of store reptile "experts" handing out 10G tanks, heat rocks, and crickets. Besides the fact that I believe that I, as a consumer, SHOULD be able to do business with a company directly and not have to deal with a middle man (retailer) the way of the world is exactly that. Therefore, if you want to make a few dollars profit on a product, fine. Nothing wrong with that in the business world. Business taxes, payroll, Workers comp, etc....Fine.... But don't take TOO much advantage of me simply because someone on the 35th floor of a highrise in downtown Anywhere decides that he wants to get greedy...... Same thing goes for "mom and pop". THEY, however, know that they can only push it so far before consumers start looking for a better deal.
