and it is apparent you are not "reading into" what I have been saying for several months on the "pet store" thing. I'm not waisting my time to read you LOOONG post. I think that I have been trying to give reasons of why the small "PRIVATE OWNED" (and your glasses might come in handy again because I HAVE also said "INDEPENDENT OWNED") may have to charge a bit more. But all of this is moot to me because I got out of retailing pets/supplies with no passion to get back into it again at that level.
Go visit me on the LAW FORUM. This is where I have (and others) wondered why the pet stores don't get PRO-ACTIVE on anything.
And oh by the way...try to tell me about Wal-Mart...my wife is a corporate manager for Wal-Mart !
Next your termonology is dead wrong on me calling my previous pet store "independently owned" ! I OWNED the property, I OWNED my building, I owned my store, I owned my stock in the store. I take it that YOU pay rent, don't own your building, don't own the property the store is on, don't always own your supplies and stock ? If so..then you ARE an independent owner. If you don't even consider you as that ..then I guess you might be one of those "mom & pop stores.
The term of mom & pop relating to the business of any small scaled or down-sized business : was brought about due to the small cash flow, small corner business, older folks that had or started a small business because of something to do on retiring, a family business to put the kids into, even a hobby type of persona business.

That's all.....

: First of all I HAVE had in the past and continue to, run my own small business. So, that being the case I think I can jump into this discussion with some first hand knowledge. IF past the first year, which I would consider start up, my business was not profitable enough and I had to get a second job to support that business, I'd have to take a serious look at what I was doing wrong. There is NO reason anyone should have to get a second job to support their own business -that is insane. Oh and by the way, it's not privately owned, it's independantly owned. "Mom and Pop shops" are a local term used for the small, independently owned businesses. Too bad you're so uptight that you can't even see where it can be a benefit to a business to be called a "Mom and Pop" .... guess you flunked marketing 101.

: Now, I do compete with WalMart, Osco Drugs, Walgreens and everywhere else that sells cosmetics and hygene items. My line of consumables is much more costly than what you would pay at any of these stores. However, it is my opinion and the opinion of all my customers that my products are far better than what can be purchased at these discount places. So, blaming the super store just doesn't cut it in my book.

: Now, let's look at the pet industry, reptile supplies in particular ... Where I live the discount stores (Walmart, KMart, etc) do not carry reptile supplies. PetCo does, the small independently owned shops do and I can choose to shop over the net. Let's take a look at a ZooMed 5.0 ... PetCo is selling them for $35.00, most of the independent stores are selling them for around $30.00 and where I buy mine, which is in state but I do order via the net, he sells them for around $22.00. Common sense is that I will buy the light that is cheapest. Now, if our small independently owned shop can sell them to us for $22.00, why is everyone else charging so much more? The answer is simple, it's for larger profit. There's no difference in the product, same light, same manufacturer, same quality ... there is just no reason for that large of a price difference. I have even seen them sold by other shops for as little as $18.00 a piece.

: Pet stores are making a larger profit off of the supplies they sell than the animals they sell. If they're not, then they are definetly doing something wrong and won't be in business very long. Consumers generally only buy one animal but they must continue to purchase supplies for as long as they own that animal. It's not my problem as a consumer that the pet shop owner is clueless as to how to properly buy inventory for their shop. It's not my job as a consumer to reward their laziness or stupidity by buying their over priced items. You can't tell me that it is impossible for the small pet shop to get good wholesale prices -that's bull. How do I know? I shop at a small, independently owned place and I know his prices. He even beats WalMart on ceramic light fixtures!! Let me tell you he isn't hurting in the least either!! I've seen his new house on all that land... pretty dang nice!!

: You also have to look at the economic climate of the area the business is in. If you are in an area densly populated with less than middle class people then of course WalMart is going to win out with their low prices! We live in an economicly diverse city with a larger than average welfare population. We have tons of small businesses here that thrive because there are people like me that believe you get what you pay for and can afford to purchase better quality goods and services. I am at an economic point in my life where I can afford $200.00 sneakers. My neighbors however can't and therefor, in order for them to atleast have the basic needs of life, they have no choice but to shop WalMart. On the other hand, if Joe's Shoes has my sneakers for $150.00 and Pete's Footwear has the same pair for $125.00 -where do you think I am going to buy my sneakers?

: There are tons of factors that explain why a business fails and why another succeeds but the bottom line is, most of the time, it has more to do with the person running it than anything else. I have seen more businesses fail because the owner was a fool than I have ever seen a WalMart put out of business.

: I'm not entirely sure what jewelry has to do with any of this but I'm sure, knowing your behavior here on the net, you'll be sure to tell me all about it.
