First, let me say that I really cannot comprehend the idea of starting a business, regardless of what it is, that will never be profitable enough that one would continue having to work a second job - in my mind that simply is not the point of starting a business - unless you WANT to keep it so small that you have to work a second job.
My absolute BEST example, as far as markups are concerned, is that I know of one retailer who gets ZooMed's for $17 wholesale. Now if ZooMed is willing to sell to a "mom and pop" for that wholesale price then WHY, or more directly HOW, can the large "chain" stores that can purchase in bulk justify a possible 100%+ markup on these bulbs ?
There simply cannot be equivalent levels of pure ignorance dictating that "misinformation" be handed out - I just can't buy that. I've witnessed entirely too many incidents, in various stores, of store reptile "experts" handing out 10G tanks, heat rocks, and crickets. Besides the fact that I believe that I, as a consumer, SHOULD be able to do business with a company directly and not have to deal with a middle man (retailer) the way of the world is exactly that. Therefore, if you want to make a few dollars profit on a product, fine. Nothing wrong with that in the business world. Business taxes, payroll, Workers comp, etc....Fine.... But don't take TOO much advantage of me simply because someone on the 35th floor of a highrise in downtown Anywhere decides that he wants to get greedy...... Same thing goes for "mom and pop". THEY, however, know that they can only push it so far before consumers start looking for a better deal.
