Opening his mouth (gaping) was probably from heat...sun beating down...his way of cooling off. OR he could have been nervous and it was a threatening display. I would be very wary of driving around with him loose while the top is down-- that could result in a very sad and ugly mess. Iguanas can be uncontrollable even while you hold them, gator rolling etc. to the point where he could flip out of your hands and right out of the moving car. If you have the top down, I suggest a pet carrier (good idea regardless).

Headbobs can mean all kinds of things... "hello" "don't forget this is my territory!" "I am king" "I don't like that!" etc.
