Hi Bosse...

Ive used zinc oxide for wound management with fantastic results from burns (AFTER debrided and healing with a/b topicals) to sebaceous cysts on tails, treating post op surgical incisions w/ quicker healing compared to a/b topicals alone and Im not sure WHY it works. The pharmacist at work told me it does not work as a bacteriocide so I made sure I used it once I KNEW these wounds were not infected/in threat of being infected but healing. Mader's Reptile Medicine & Surgery pg. 316 mentions "whenever possible a cream is desirable to an ointment base. While an ointment base gives the appearance of being more protective, it is apparently also an irritant that may retard healing" Here is a link to zinc in wound management you might find interesting.
Yeah I read a little on aloe vera too...my thought is that aloe should NOT be used on reptiles as a FIRST line of defense;(anti-bacterial, the first 24 hours after wound being crucial time for treatment),BEFORE debridement/evaluated by a vet but for wound management once healing has begun yeah I would give whole leaf aloe a try on my reptiles...but first I wanna get a plant ;-) A couple of interesting case studies on rodents:
