I forgot to mention that it works quite well on human scratches too. I use it daily on my lovely iguana "signatures" which are scratched into my forearms and hands. (Last week at church a lady whispered to me, "Do you work with rose bushes?" I shook my head no and whispered back, "I have two pet iguanas.". She gave me a strange look, but oh well!
Anyway, Aloe Vera is used as healing agent because it seems to speed up the healing process dramatically. It also prevents scaring. It's wonderful! No iguana owner shoudld be without a plant of Aloe in their home.
No worries if you don't have a green thumb: I've had mine for literally years, and I can't seem to keep any other plants alive for long. Aloe veras are cactus-like plants which are hearty and easy to keep alive. They only need water every few *weeks* in the winter, and a tiny bit more often in the summer. And voila! You have your own super-healing, anti-scaring remedy for scratches and burns.
(And no, I don't have stock in the Aloe Vera market... :) I just wanted to share this information with you because it really seems to help.) :)
