We live in rural KY, and power outages are a fact of life. For years, we have depended on a wood stove and kerosene heaters when the power is out, but our Christmas present to each other was a gasoline generator. We have an outside hookup which connects to the breaker panel, and you switch it there to run up to six circuits. We can run the furnace, microwave, some lights and tv, and most importantly, Bug's electric heater for his whole room heat. We've tested it, but haven't had to use it yet. Let those Spring thunderstorms try us out now!
