How can you tell if spikes are ready to shead?

I just examined closly Lucy's spikes today and I'm afraid there is some build up on many of them. In fact, one of them is broken and ready to fall off. I looked for others like this one and found several others that seem to have cracks in the front and if you tip the spike back you can see that it looks as if you could break it off. I could sure use some help with this one. Any pictures of spikes in different conditions? Any comments or suggestions? I'm off to a play (my son's the fiddler on the roof)but will check the forum later tonight. Thanks, Russell.
